While this advisory concentrates on whether or not inversion therapy helps bring back pain relief, we should mention other benefits people experience with a regular program of inversion:
Improving Circulation.
Modern lifestyle creates problems with blood circulation from many angles: it is one of our major health concerns. Whilst there is no one therapy that we should apply to all cases of poor circulation, inversion therapy does offer some improvement. When you’re inverted, your body is assisted in its need to have good fluid circulation : that is blood and lymph fluid surrounding the tissues. Standing up, or sitting up, we’re working against gravity trying to push a fairly viscous fluid around our body. With inversion therapy we’re aided by gravity rather than having to work against it. One of the benefits here is that with inversion, gravity is helping the lymphatic system to circulate and drain from the tissues faster; and that has the effect of easing aches and pains of stiff muscles.
Relieving Stress.
Stress is a modern concern, and it comes from many causes. If you do exercises like yoga, then you know just how a full-body stretch feels rejuvenating! Well, keep that up.. but it’s also true that a passive way of stretching and relaxing can alleviate stress. So benefit #2: an inversion table brings relaxation. Loss of sleep compounds stress, so another welcome benefit of inversion therapy is that many people sleep better with regular inversion therapy.
Mental Alertness.
Poor circulation, stress, loss of sleep.. all these things we’ve looked at so far reduce mental alertness, and therefore the pleasure of being more awake.. Part of the problem that these negative factors bring is a reduction of oxygen circulation to the brain. Oxygen is essential for brain function:

I’m only in my 50’s, but already it’s clear that the body is not as readily flexible as it used to be.. Inversion Therapy and Safety.
Hanging upside down as a method of back pain relief does not carry the risks that come with many other treatments, such as drugs and surgery.
Some have raised a concern that inversion therapy would increase the chance of stroke. According to Roger Teeter, one of the pioneers in this field, “In 25 years, I have never seen a case – published or unpublished – where inversion caused a stroke.”
Some users get concerned because their face gets red when they are inverted. But, as mentioned above, this is a good thing because it shows that the blood flow to the brain, eyes, skin is increasing. I think much of the worry is just that it feels unfamiliar to be a little inverted. and we latch on to a ’symptom’ to place or uncertainty on.. Remember inversion therapy only tilts you back a little off the horizontal: you don’t have to hang vertically upside down like meat! With a little time, you get used to what it feels like when you are inverted. If you feel uncomfortable, just invert at a lesser angle or for a shorter period of time until you get used to the sensation of being inverted.
Common sense advises that if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or an eye condition, or if you have had spinal fusion surgery, you should check with your doctor before inverting.
It’s worth remembering that extensive research shows that inversion therapy is as safe as most daily activities.
What Makes a Good Inversion Table?
Inversion therapy has come a long, long way sine Hippocrates strung up patients with ropes and ladders! Inversion tables offer comfort, sound construction and convenience of operation.

Around 400 BC, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, strung up a patient on a ladder with ropes and pulleys to treat his back pain, by hanging upside down. Inversion therapy, also known as spinal decompression therapy, has come a long, long way in comfort, construction and convenience since those days. Could a true back pain cure with an incredible success rate get covered up… Even if it has millions of success stories and a 2000 year track record?
Would you believe that for over 2000 years the medical community has been ignoring a time-tested and proven treatment for back pain relief?
As you’ve likely experienced, most doctors are too busy treating the symptoms of back pain with treatment like anti-inflammatory medications, electrical stimulation, ultrasound and cortisone injections, and they simply ignore what is one of the biggest factors that contributes to back pain.

What is Spinal Compression and What Causes It?

From the moment we are born, our bodies are at the mercy of gravity, a force that continuously creates pressure and stress on all of our muscles, bones, joints and ligaments.
By far, the part of the body that is affected most by gravity is the spine. The combination of gravity and muscle imbalances shove the vertebrae together, pressing on the discs.
The inner core of your discs consists of jelly-like material that acts like a shock absorber system, providing flexibility and cushioning when you are sitting, standing or exercising.
During your normal daily activities, gravity causes fluid to squeeze out of your discs into adjacent soft tissue. With less space between the discs, you lose some height. When you sleep, some - but not all - of the fluid soaks back into the discs.
During a typical day, you can lose as much as ¾ inch in height! And because there’s only a partial recovery at night, the average person loses ½ inch to 2 inches in height by their senior years.
Insufficient distance between the vertebrae can result in nerve root pressure, which in turn causes pain.
To make matters worse, very often the pressure on the discs is not distributed evenly. Your discs were not designed to cope with such uneven pressure, and sooner or later it will be too much for them to withstand. The discs will bulge, herniate, causing spinal damage and likely, a life with chronic pain.
Even the slightest increase in spacing can be enough to allow a herniated disc to pop back into place or relieve pressure from a compressed nerve.

What is this mysterious treatment that has been proven effective but is being ignored?
Inversion Therapy or Spinal Decompression Therapy.
Inversion therapy is a method of treating back pain by diminishing the influence of gravity, reducing the compression of the vertebrae and discs and allowing the muscles and ligaments that encase the spine to relax.
This is typically performed on what’s called an inversion table. The table allows you to lie on your back relaxed, in an inverted position. This position eliminates some or all gravitational compression, depending upon how far back you position your body.
Inversion therapy is the safest, quickest and most effective way to increase the space between your vertebrae. Numerous clinical studies published in reputable medical journals have confirmed that inversion really does increase the separation between the discs of the spine, which brings relief from back pain.

Will Back Surgery Work?
If you suffer from severe and chronic back pain, and you’re considering surgery, it’s important to look at serious alternatives: surgery is final, and if it doesn’t work…
Back pain is often treated by surgery, when physiotherapy and drugs fail. But surgery also often doesn’t work; in fact, that there’s a clinical term for failure: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome! Perhaps this should be something surgeons suffer? - but sadly it refers to back pain patients…
To my mind, if a treatment doesn’t work and has an expectation of not working.. it is not a treatment at all; it’s an experiment at best and desperation at worst…
Some Reasons Why Surgery Doesn’t Work
This isn’t advice that you should not have surgery. It’s offering a window of consideration before making a vital decision: remember once you have surgery that’s final.. There are several surgical procedures for back pain, and they try to do one of two things: remove the pressure on the nerve that registers pain or
stabilize the spine.
Say you have a herniated disc:
The pain is there because the disc is pressing on a nerve. On the surface of it the solution is to remove the part of the disc that’s touching the nerve. But it’s not that simple…
1. Once the operation is done, your body goes through a recovery process. That process can include a lot of pain and awkward movement just to get you through each day. Here’s where you could meet difficulties…. The awkward movements you’re making will be putting unnatural wear and tear on other areas of your body. Areas where that might cause propblems would be above or below the surgery site, and in other joints such as the hips or sacroiliac. You might have already found that your back condition causes you to hold your body in an un-natural pose that puts strain on limb joints. I used to get knee pain from the way I walked with lower back pain..
2. Back pain surgery is going to done near to nerves. Surgery means scar tissue and a build up in this can make contact with a nerve. This can be painful, just as if the disc was still pressing on the nerve.
3. Post-op rehabilitation is most likely only going to address your post-operative pain. It will aim to improve functional “activities of daily living” - things like taking a bath, dressing yourself, toiletting. This enables you to go home quickly and be safe; but post-op rehab won’t address the long-term causes of the pain.
The Causes of Back Pain
Most back pain conditions are related to problems with postural alignment. Think of it as being similar to a car having a tyre out of alignment.
For our body, improper alignment means an abnormal curvature of the spine and abnormal orientation of the pelvis. The way to get our bodies back into alignment, so they can function normally again, is to work on getting our muscles back into alignment.
Some Important Questions If You’re looking At Surgery
Before you are consider surgery, I’d recommend consulting a qualified therapist. Give this a fair shot. It needs about 60 days to fairly trial the options of doing work on stretching and strengthening your muscles to help re-align your posture.
If you do this and still opt for surgery, you’ll need good rehab after the operation.
Your rehab will need to work on decreasing your pain in the first place, so you can go home safely. Your rehab should also address the following issues that deal with the root cause or causes of your pain.
1. Ask the surgeon and therapist to examine you for dysfunction (poor alignments), including these potential problem areas: the curvature of my spine from top to bottom
the position of my pelvis (i.e. is it level or tipping)
2. The therapist should be able to explain how your muscles are out of balance - that is, tell you which muscles are strong or weak, flexible or tight in relation to one another.
3. You need to know which muscles to stretch and which ones to strengthen. You need to get the therapist to explain what each muscle group does, and that will help you to know how to do the exercises correctly.
4. You need to ask both your surgeon and your therapist to write everything down and ask them for a copy: this is part of your long-term treatment plan.
What’s A Success…
Having a long-term plan for your back means you’re looking for some measure of substantial improvement, if not cure: let’s call that success..
I’ve been pain-free for 9 years now and having suffered back pain for around 9 years, in my forties, I think I’d have been happy with 5 years remission. That seems a reasonable goal.
One final comment on the option of surgery: the main criterion for success would be that it provides substantial relief, if not cure, for 5 years. The main reason why that goal might not be achieved is that the treatment might not be addressing the underlying cause of pain.
If the treatment strategy you chose addresses the issues around muscle imbalance, then you will have a much better chance if getting onto a path to a pain-free life.

Natural Ways to Reduce Inflammation and Pain - 10 Super Foods
Too many people experience chronic pain that could be alleviated by simple , inexpensive and natural treatments. Maybe western medicine has let them down or they’re just fed up with non-prescription pain medication. Meanwhile, a easy and natural solution could be sitting right at home on the dinner table.
Chronic pain is often associated with inflammation, whether in painful joints or other tissues in the body. Anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly part of a treatement regime to combat chronic painful conditions. Yet, sadly they can have side-effects that cast doubt on the wisdom of using them.
In my June post on Natural Pain Remedies, I made the pint that “toxins” are defined as poisons that are made by living organisms. I also pointed out that it makes sense that living organisms have also developed compounds to can rid themselves of “toxins”. Well “food” basically comes from living organisms, so let’s look at how some foods can be a source of anti-toxins and provide natural anti-inflammatory benefits.
Alfalfa. Alfalfa plant leaves are rich in vitamins, protein and minerals, and we value them as a good source of high levels of basic nutrients. They also create a natural anti-arthritic activity due to their high Chlorophyll content. You can easily buy Alfalfa at your local food market or your health food store. We generally buy and use in the form of sprouts; and it also comes as juice and food supplement capsules. Great in salads or part of a juice-blend.
Chamomile. When I was in my mid 20’s I developed high blood pressure, and I wasn’t about to start a life on medication… Amongst the natural remedies I had recourse to was Chamomile. I drank it as a tea and appreciated the very rapid effect that it had on calming down my state of tension. Sure enough, Chamomile is well known as a relaxant. It is also recognized as having anti spasmodic and an anti-inflammatory activity. By the way it also helps you get to sleep..
Fenugreek. If you like curry, you’re probably already familiar with the flovour of Fenugreek. In cooking we generally use the plant’s leaves, seeds, and sprouts. Most supermarkets sell these spices thesedays, but youy might do better checking out your local Indian food-market. Fenugrek leaves and sprouts will add a welcome boost to a salad; and the seeds can be used to season a variety of stews, and sauces (not just curry).
Fenugreek is a natural anti-inflammatory and its plant steroid components will help to rebuild tissues. Recently there has been interest in the possibility of using Fenugrek in treatments for cancer.
Flax. We hear a lot about feeding our hearts and reducing cholestrol with Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s have also been examined in depth for their anti-inflammatory properties, and contribution to the body’s capacity for healing. There are also links with fighting cancer and treating diabetes.
Flax seeds are a great source of Omega 3’s. You can add the seeds to most food preparations. The oil can be used in cooking and be used to make dressings and sauces (the ones you make with fenugrek & alfalfa?).
Ginger. Just about my favourite, a great aditive to tea and a delicious flavouring for many dishes. Whether in tea or ice cream, Ginger is easy to take in and brings with it marvellous health benefits. In Oriental medicine it is often part of herbal therapy as an agent to help stimulate blood circulation. It is yet another natural anti-inflammatory; and the maxim is: less inflammation, less pain.
Licorice. Don’t think of those black straps you find at the grocery store! Licorice is best bought as a dried root. Licorice root has been used to treat stomach ulcers, bronchitis, and sore throat, as well as infections caused by viruses, such as hepatitis. Take care though, too much pure licorice can be dangerous,causing raised blood pressure. Used moderately though it is another part of our natural resources to fight inflammation and pain.
Rosemary. A very popular garden herb, Rosemary is a first-class food to treat pain. Among its active ingredients are compounds that naturally ease nerve and muscle tension and therefore pain. If you suffer from chronic headaches you’ll also benefit from this old cookbook favourite. Rosemary contains salicin, a natural glycoside - interestingly, which aspirin is made from.
You can get Rosemary just about anywhere and is an excellent herb for flavouring many dishes, salad dressings, stews, soups, sauces and even tea.
Sage. Another popular garden herb, and not just a annual stuffing ingredient. Sage helps improve muscles aches and the pains of inflammation. Also keeps your mind clear. White sage is a potent anti-inflammatory , usually consumed as tea, while common sage is either drunk as tea or used to season food.
Shitake mushroom. Shitake is a well known agent in oriental medicine. Recently it has been used to treat immune-deficiency conditions resulting from chemotherapy, hepatitis, aids and other chronic infections. It is recognized as anti-cancer agent and an anti viral. Shitake is particularly effectivein treatment of arthritis and other chronic joint pain.
Shitake mushrooms can be enjoyed raw, sauted, baked, added to just about any meal and they’re easy to find in your local supermarket.
This is just a sample, and there are many other “super foods” like them.
As a general principle: the more whole foods you can eat the better, because the valuable medicinal agents in wholefoods are retained.
When we suffer chronic pain it tends to rule our life. It doesn’t have to be so. Nature has provided us with many healthy solutions and treatments for our aches and pains.
You probably already have a fridge and food cupboard storing natural remedies. your local stores certainly hold a lot more.

Aspirin, Anti-Inflammatory Friend? or Foe?
Following from our look at some natural and traditional medicines that reduce inflammation, pain and swelling, here’s a few timely reflections on a popular standard that’s been regaining favour in recent years. Aspirin is being used more widely again for it’s blood thinning properties, but is it a friend?

An Aspirin a Day Keeps the… Doctor Here to

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United
States.
Each year, one million people suffer from a heart attack; and half of them die. At least 600,000 Americans have a stroke, which is the third leading cause of death. Aggressive attempts have been made throughout the years to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease, including the daily use of aspirin.
Aspirin therapy helps prevent blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots. This, in turn, keeps blood thin and flowing more smoothly, thus lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. (Both are usually the result of a clot lodging in a narrowed artery and choking off the tissue’s blood supply.)
But there is a grey cloud inside this silver lining. Although aspirin appears as a simple over-the-counter treatment, it is in fact a drug that produces side effects-many of which can be severe. Long-term aspirin use has been linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, kidney damage and peptic ulcers. Aspirin irritates and erodes the stomach lining and often leads to gastrointestinal bleeding. The chance of bleeding is even higher when aspirin is used in combination with other
anti-inflammatory drugs.
In addition, aspirin therapy can cause bleeding in the brain, especially in elderly
folks. Healthy people taking aspirin as a preventative measure to ward off
stokes can also develop bleeding. Supposedly the occurrence is rare;
nonetheless, the risk is still there.
As if that isn’t bad enough, research is now showing that many people are resistant to aspirin. That is, aspirin does nothing to protect them from heart attacks and strokes.
In fact, taking aspirin makes them more susceptible to both conditions. Apparently, the clotting ability of their blood is strong enough to prevent aspirin from doing its job.
This action makes their situation worse and increases the likelihood of having a
heart attack or stroke. Some researchers suggest that any where from 20 to 49
percent of the population is aspirin-resistant. A recent analysis of 2,367
people found that 26 percent were resistant to the effects of aspirin. Of these
individuals, 33 percent suffered a heart attack, stroke or other health problem.
Although it is not completely understood, resistance may be higher in men,
diabetics, smokers, and those who have high blood pressure.
Unfortunately, many doctors continue to prescribe aspirin on a routine
basis to their patients. As is often the case in our society, medication is
thought to be the solution for all of our ills. Because every drug has side
effects, they should be used very cautiously.
One of the most effective blood thinners is proteolytic enzymes . Not only do they thin the blood naturally, but they also cleanse the blood of toxins, kill viruses and bacteria, eat away at excess fibrin (scar tissue) and reduce inflammation and pain.

Often times, there are other, safer ways of preventing disease or getting one’s health back. For example, exercising, eating right, and controlling stress greatly
reduce the risk of heart disease. Several studies have found that garlic as well
as fish oil lowers cholesterol and thins the blood, protecting against clots.
Antioxidants found naturally in fruits and vegetables help prevent everything from cancer to heart attacks. Bromelain, a natural enzyme in pineapple, acts as an anti-inflammatory and also keeps plaques from developing in artery walls.
Eating small amounts of chocolate has even been associated with reducing heart disease risk. Research shows that cocoa beans contain natural plant chemicals that are good for blood flow. However, milk chocolate contains considerably fewer of these chemicals, compared to dark chocolate. It contains a lot of added sugar as well. So look for bars with a minimum of 60 percent cocoa and not too much added sugar.
Chocolate, of course, is high in calories, so go easy on your consumption.
While taking aspirin regularly may be beneficial for some people, it is not without
risk. And in many cases, aspirin may do more harm than good. All drugs have side
effects, including over-the-counter medications, so their use should be carefully considered.
Healthy lifestyle habits and other natural remedies need be taken into account as alternatives to drugs whenever possible.
So, dump the aspirin and use the safer and proven alternatives.

Natural Pain Remedies -
Is Old Better Than New?
I want to offer a few thoughts on dealing with pain. But first a question:
When you think about getting pain relief, do you reach for some brand of ibuprofen?
That’s one of the most popular over the counter pain relievers today, so I’m guessing the answer was “yes”.
As a one-time back pain sufferer I’ve a great interest in pain relief that doesn’t come with side effects that will ultimately add to the problem. I found that modern medicines don’t necessarily offer the best solutions…
People have been using pain relievers for centuries, and there’s hundreds, maybe thousands, of proven, natural pain relievers.
You might think we’re talking potions and (sugar) pills here, but many of these old natural remedies have been tested clinically in major laboratories and have been proven to work. Sometimes they’re even better than modern drugs..
So I want to share some of these with you today. Let’s take a look at seven of these traditional natural healing medicines… We’re mostly looking at Proteolytic enzymes (protein splitters) that have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and that also boost cardiovascular, respiratory and immune function.
1. Bromelain - If you like houseplants and you’re familiar with Bromediads.. you might recognize where this comes from, that’s right - it’s extracted from pineapple. It contains several proteolytic enzymes ( enzymes that break down proteins ) and these have been shown to break multiple pain pathways in the body.
Its discovery in 1957 has led to hundreds of studies that have shown Bromelain can reduce inflammation and reduce and prevent swelling. It also helps by removing toxins from the blood. Toxins aren’t just poisons, they’re poisons that are made by living organisms. Stands to sense living organisms have also developed compounds that can rid themselves of toxins.
A study in pain relief tested 77 patients, who were given 400mg/day of Bromelain. All experienced significant reduction in pain and swelling.
2. Tumeric Extract - if you make curry, chances are you know this natural medicine. Its taken from dried roots of the Tumeric plant and ground to powder. This medicine has been used for thousands of years.
In a situation where there’s inflammation you’re likely to find a couple of enzymes at work : COX-2 and 5-LOX. These compounds are involved in the process of creating pain. Any treatment of pain that doesn’t address the underlying inflammation is not going to be effective.
